Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has emphasized dialogue and consultation as the preferred path for resolving economic and trade differences between China and the European Union (EU). The statement was made during talks in Beijing on Thursday with Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Maxime Prevot.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, expressed China's hope that Belgium would leverage its position within the EU to play an active and constructive role. He highlighted that both China and Belgium share a commitment to settling disputes through political dialogue and upholding international law, forming a solid foundation for their all-round friendly cooperative partnership.
"China is willing to, together with Belgium, uphold mutual respect, seek common ground while managing differences, maintain close dialogue and communication, enhance mutual understanding and trust, strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, deepen practical cooperation, and jointly elevate China-Belgium relations to a new level," Wang stated.
In response, Deputy Prime Minister Prevot underscored the critical importance of Belgium-China relations, reaffirming Belgium's firm adherence to the one-China policy. On economic issues, he voiced a clear stance against protectionism, expressing Belgium's readiness to engage in positive, open, and constructive dialogue with China to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation.
Prevot also acknowledged and appreciated China's consistent efforts to help ease regional tensions through dialogue. He conveyed Belgium's willingness to uphold multilateralism, safeguard international law, and play a positive role in fostering the healthy development of EU-China relations.
The meeting signals a continued push from both sides to navigate complex international trade dynamics through communication and cooperation, offering a stable pathway forward for one of the world's most significant economic relationships.
