China, Cabo Verde Celebrate 50 Years of Diplomatic Ties

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Cabo Verdean President Jose Maria Neves exchanged congratulatory messages on Saturday, April 25, 2026, highlighting a partnership built on mutual respect and fruitful cooperation.

In his message, President Xi underscored the enduring and flourishing traditional friendship between the two nations. "Over the past five decades, the two sides have understood and supported each other on issues related to their respective core interests and major concerns, and cooperation in development and livelihood sectors has yielded positive results," Xi stated. He noted that China-Cabo Verde relations serve as a fine example of friendly cooperation between countries of different sizes.

President Xi emphasized his commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties. He expressed readiness to work with President Neves to "seize the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations to carry forward the time-honored friendship, deepen practical cooperation, and enhance multilateral coordination, to continuously enrich the strategic partnership between the two countries and bring greater benefits to the two peoples."

President Neves, in his message, conveyed Cabo Verde's deep appreciation for the friendly cooperation with China over the past half-century. He specifically thanked China for its "valuable contributions to the sustainable development" of the island nation. Neves affirmed Cabo Verde's willingness to collaborate with China to "consolidate political mutual trust and deepen mutual beneficial cooperation so as to deliver more benefits to the two peoples."

The exchange marks a significant milestone for a relationship that was formally established in 1976. Observers note that the partnership has consistently focused on development projects and people-centered initiatives, fostering strong bonds between the two nations.
