Kung Fu Connects: China-Africa Film Co-Productions on the Rise

The enduring appeal of Chinese martial arts cinema is forging a unique cultural bridge between the Chinese mainland and Africa, setting the stage for increased collaborative filmmaking. This connection was highlighted at the recent Beijing International Film Festival, where experts pointed to a shared cinematic language as a foundation for deeper partnership.

Luc Bendza, Chief Representative of the African Film Association in Asia and China, notes that the popularity of Chinese action heroes from Bruce Lee to contemporary stars like Wu Jing has created a lasting passion among African audiences. "These films are more than entertainment," Bendza shared. "They convey universal values of humility, respect, and peace, which resonate deeply and help African viewers gain a richer understanding of Chinese culture."

This shared appreciation is now translating into tangible industry collaboration. Film professionals from both sides are increasingly exploring co-production opportunities, seeing cinema as a powerful medium to strengthen people-to-people ties and mutual understanding.

Looking ahead, the momentum is building for more joint projects. Bendza expressed optimism at the festival, anticipating that 2026 will see a significant uptick in co-produced films. These collaborations are expected to blend storytelling traditions, showcase diverse perspectives, and ultimately solidify a friendship between the peoples of China and Africa that is written in the language of film.
