China’s Defense Minister Attends SCO Talks Amid Regional Security Focus

Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun embarked on a six-day visit to Russia and Kyrgyzstan on April 23, 2026, with a key stop at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defense Ministers’ Meeting in Bishkek. The trip underscores China’s active role in shaping regional security frameworks amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.

During the SCO meeting, Dong is scheduled to deliver a speech addressing collective defense strategies and multilateral cooperation. China’s Defense Ministry emphasized plans for bilateral discussions with counterparts from SCO member states, including Russia, to advance partnerships in counterterrorism, military technology, and crisis management.

The gathering coincides with heightened security challenges in Central Asia, including transnational organized crime and infrastructure protection. Analysts note the SCO’s expanding influence, with its member states representing nearly 40% of the global population, as a stabilizing force for trade corridors critical to Eurasian economies.

Dong’s itinerary also includes meetings with Kyrgyz officials to review joint border security initiatives, reflecting Beijing’s focus on safeguarding its western frontiers. The visit marks his first major international engagement since assuming office in 2026.
