China Surpasses 5,500 Green Mines in Nationwide Sustainability Push

China has established over 5,500 provincial-level or higher green mines as part of its accelerated sustainability drive, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced this week. The milestone underscores the country’s commitment to balancing industrial growth with environmental stewardship.

Currently, more than 1,000 mines meet national-level green standards, while 4,500 others comply with provincial requirements. Newly constructed mines must now adhere to strict ecological criteria from inception, while operational sites face intensified timelines for eco-friendly upgrades. Facilities lagging behind will be required to initiate green transformation plans immediately, alongside mandatory ecological restoration programs in mining zones.

The ministry revealed plans to elevate sector-specific standards for coal and non-ferrous metal mines to national regulations, with new frameworks under development for open-pit operations and offshore energy projects. A dynamic monitoring system will regularly assess compliance, removing underperforming mines from the official green directory.

“This systematic approach ensures mining activities align with China’s broader climate goals,” a ministry representative stated, emphasizing strengthened enforcement of rehabilitation obligations for mining operators.
