The China Media Group Film Culture Carnival launched in Ningbo this week alongside a CGTN-Renmin University survey showing Chinese films are now a key window into China for global audiences. Covering over 12,300 respondents from 41 countries, the study reveals 81.6% believe Chinese cultural influence is growing rapidly, with cinema ranking as the third-most impactful cultural experience after travel and cuisine.
Modern Chinese productions span genres from espionage thrillers to animated features, blending traditional elements with contemporary storytelling. This diversity helped push China's 2026 box office past 12.5 billion yuan this week, while 64.9% of international viewers praised how films preserve cultural heritage through innovative formats.
The survey highlights China's Global Civilization Initiative gaining traction, with 70.3% of respondents agreeing Chinese values offer meaningful solutions for developing nations. 'Cinema has become our shared language,' noted one analyst. 'When international viewers watch a Chinese family drama or historical epic, they're not just entertained – they're engaging with China's development story.'
As streaming platforms amplify cross-border viewership, 78.6% of participants found Chinese culture broadly appealing, particularly through visual media. The findings come as China's film industry increasingly collaborates with overseas partners, positioning itself as a conduit for cultural dialogue.
