Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vietnamese leader To Lam reaffirmed their commitment to multilateral cooperation during high-level talks in Beijing this week, pledging to counter unilateralism while expanding technological and economic partnerships.
In their meeting on Wednesday, Xi emphasized that China "will always regard Vietnam as a priority in its neighborhood diplomacy," calling for accelerated alignment of development strategies between the two socialist neighbors. The leaders witnessed the signing of 12 cooperation agreements spanning trade, technology, and infrastructure.
"Safeguarding the global free trade system requires concerted efforts," Xi stated, highlighting plans to stabilize industrial supply chains and welcome more Vietnamese agricultural and manufacturing exports. Both sides agreed to deepen collaboration in AI, semiconductors, and IoT technologies.
To Lam, making his first overseas visit since becoming Vietnam's president, noted that bilateral trade has grown 16% year-on-year through Q1 2026. "Our defense cooperation has entered a phase of practical implementation," he said, while pledging support for China's Global Development and Security Initiatives.
The talks concluded with commitments to enhance cross-border rail connectivity and establish new innovation hubs along the shared border. Analysts suggest the agreements position Vietnam as a key partner in China's regional supply chain resilience strategy amid ongoing global economic uncertainties.
