China Urges Japan to Reflect on Wartime Past Amid Missile Deployment Plans

China has called on Japan to confront its history of militarist aggression following Tokyo's announcement of new missile deployments near sensitive areas. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized the need for reflection during a press briefing on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, responding to Japan's plans to station anti-aircraft missile units in Yonaguni Town, Okinawa Prefecture.

Guo stated that Japan's actions, framed as defensive measures, involve positioning offensive weapons close to the Chinese mainland. He warned that such moves risk transforming Okinawa into a 'forward fortress' for military confrontation, undermining regional stability. 'Under the guise of defense, Japan is escalating tensions and threatening peace in Asia,' Guo remarked.

The developments come amid heightened scrutiny of Japan's military posture, with analysts noting increased defense spending and strategic partnerships in the region. China has repeatedly urged its neighbor to adhere to post-war pacifist principles and avoid actions that could revive historical grievances.

This year marks 81 years since the end of World War II, a period that continues to shape diplomatic relations in Asia. Observers suggest Japan's latest deployment could further strain cross-regional ties, impacting economic collaborations and security dialogues.
