China has strongly opposed the UK government’s decision to exclude Ming Yang Smart Energy’s wind turbines from its offshore wind power projects, calling the move “unfair” and a violation of market principles. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) issued a statement on April 14, 2026, urging the UK to reconsider its stance, which it claims undermines bilateral economic cooperation.
The dispute follows the UK’s recent decision to block Chinese-made turbines from its renewable energy projects, citing national security concerns. A MOFCOM spokesperson argued that the restriction contradicts British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s January 2026 pledge to deepen Sino-UK collaboration in trade and environmental protection during his official visit to China. “This decision harms local economies and the UK public’s interests,” the spokesperson stated, emphasizing China’s demand for a “fair and non-discriminatory” business environment.
Analysts suggest the friction reflects growing global competition in green technology sectors. While the UK aims to bolster domestic renewable energy supply chains, China remains a dominant player in wind turbine manufacturing, accounting for over 50% of global production capacity as of 2026.
