China’s AG600 Amphibious Aircraft Cleared for Market Launch

China’s domestically developed AG600, the world’s largest civil amphibious aircraft by takeoff weight, has received its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), paving the way for its commercial entry. The milestone highlights advancements in the country’s aviation sector and strengthens its emergency response infrastructure.

Developed by state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the AG600 measures 38.9 meters in length with a 38.8-meter wingspan, slightly larger than standard single-aisle passenger jets. Designed as a firefighting and disaster-relief aircraft, it addresses critical gaps in national emergency systems, prioritizing lifesaving and property protection during natural disasters.

This certification marks the first compliance of a Chinese-developed large special-purpose aircraft with civil aviation safety standards. Analysts note the AG600’s dual civilian and strategic roles, reflecting China’s growing aerospace innovation while supporting global humanitarian efforts.
