In a significant development at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that participants reached a consensus on revitalizing multilateralism. Wang emphasized that the United Nations' role is indispensable and should be strengthened to maintain its pivotal position in global governance.
Chairing the high-level meeting titled \"Practicing multilateralism, reforming and improving global governance,\" Wang highlighted China’s four proposals aimed at rejuvenating multilateralism and building a just and rational global governance system. He stated that all participants agreed the trend of multilateralism is irreversible and that countries should support a multilateral system with the United Nations at its core.
Wang further noted that the trend toward unity and progress is unstoppable, underscoring the interdependence of nations and their shared future. He stressed that strong countries should refrain from bullying weaker ones and that a return to a \"law of the jungle\" approach must be avoided.
Addressing the need for reform, Wang pointed out that global governance systems must be reformed to enhance the representation of the Global South, ensuring that the will and interests of the majority of countries are reflected in the reform process.
Four Suggestions for Enhancing the UN Security Council
Reflecting on the UNSC’s role amidst major global crises and conflicts, Wang proposed four key suggestions to better fulfill its duties:
- Prioritize the Common Good: Countries should focus on the common interests of the international community rather than solely on their own.
- Sincere Cooperation: Restoring unity among the five permanent members of the Security Council is essential and should begin with constructive dialogue.
- Honor Commitments: Security Council resolutions carry legal force and must be fully implemented without selective application or double standards.
- Reform and Improve: Continued broad and democratic consultations are needed to seek consensus on UN reform, making the Security Council more representative and efficient.
Wang concluded by emphasizing that the UNSC should use the 80th anniversary of the United Nations as an opportunity to align with the times and better meet the expectations of people worldwide.
