From Nairobi to Beijing: A Journey of Discovery
When Kariuki stepped off the plane in Beijing in 2017, he was filled with anticipation and curiosity. Leaving behind the warm embrace of Kenya, he embarked on an adventure that would immerse him in a world vastly different yet surprisingly familiar.
Embracing New Cultural Traditions
Adjusting to life at Beijing Jiaotong University, Kariuki was intrigued by China’s rich cultural heritage. From the grandeur of Chinese festivals to everyday customs, he found himself constantly learning. “Participating in the Mid-Autumn Festival was incredible,” he recalls. “The sense of community reminded me of our own celebrations back home.”
Climate Contrasts and Connections
One of the most striking differences Kariuki noticed was the climate. Accustomed to Kenya’s tropical weather, Beijing’s distinct seasons were a new experience. “Seeing snow for the first time was magical,” he says with a smile. “Though the cold was a challenge, it made me appreciate the warmth of Kenyan sunshine even more.”
Finding Common Ground
Despite the differences, Kariuki discovered unexpected similarities between China and Kenya. The emphasis on family values and respect for elders resonated deeply with him. “It surprised me how much our cultures value community and togetherness,” he reflects. “It made me feel at home even when I was thousands of kilometers away.”
Bridging Two Worlds
Through his studies and daily interactions, Kariuki has become a bridge between his homeland and his new environment. He shares Kenyan customs with his classmates and brings back stories of China’s innovation and progress to his friends and family. “This journey has broadened my perspective,” he notes. “It has shown me that while we may come from different places, we have so much in common.”
