Since its official announcement in 2009 to build a central business district around a transportation hub, Shanghai’s Hongqiao CBD has undergone a remarkable transformation. Rebranded as the Shanghai Hongqiao International Central Business District in August 2021, the area has leveraged the China International Import Expo (CIIE) as a catalyst for rapid development.
Over the past three years, the import and export volume in the Hongqiao International CBD has skyrocketed from 24.13 billion yuan ($3.37 billion) to 75.93 billion yuan, showcasing significant progress in trade. The cross-border e-commerce sector has been particularly impressive, with the Hongqiao CBD Bonded Logistics Center ranking first in the city for both orders and sales. Utilizing the CIIE platform, the CBD is establishing itself as a vital distribution hub connecting the Yangtze River Delta, serving the entire country, and reaching across the Asia-Pacific region.
Hongqiao International CBD is deepening the influence of CIIE by implementing measures to streamline services for talents in commerce and trade and enhancing its service ecosystem. The district has established a dedicated cross-border e-commerce service window for Shanghai Port and encouraged leading digital enterprises to form a digital trade industry alliance. Additionally, a “Silk Road E-commerce” digital technology application center and a new international trade platform have been launched, further promoting the development of an influential leading area for the “Silk Road E-commerce” initiative.
Efforts are also underway to build a headquarters cluster for enterprises along the Yangtze River Delta focusing on service trade, digital trade, and offshore trade. By continuously extending the industrial chain and expanding industry depth, these measures significantly enhance the CBD’s corporate landscape and service ecosystem. The result is greater vitality in economic development within the CBD, fueling regional, integrated, and international growth in both the surrounding area and the Yangtze River Delta as a whole.
