China’s table tennis champions, Zhao Shuai and Mao Jingdian, are gearing up to showcase their exceptional talents in the inaugural mixed doubles table tennis event at the Paris Paralympics. Both athletes, each holding four Paralympic gold medals, are poised to make history as they compete together on the global stage.
The dynamic duo recently clinched the mixed doubles gold at the Thailand Open in July, demonstrating their formidable partnership. Zhao, 29, will also compete in singles and doubles events in Paris. Notably, he served as one of the eight flag-bearers during the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Games.
Having partnered for about a year, Zhao and Mao acknowledge the challenges ahead. “We have some strong opponents including Ukraine and France, and a lot of big challenges are ahead of us,” Zhao commented. “There are ups and downs in our training, and we need to try our best to make adjustments and fully show our ability.”
Mao echoed his sentiments, expressing admiration for Zhao’s dedication. “He practiced so hard, and after I saw him training, I found that I worked not hard enough,” she admitted.
As they prepare for the Paris Paralympics, Zhao and Mao are determined to elevate their performance, aiming to bring pride to their country and inspire fans worldwide with their perseverance and teamwork.
