Chinese BMX Riders Sun Jiaqi and Deng Yawen Qualify for Paris Summer Olympics

The Chinese Cycling Association announced on Friday that Sun Jiaqi and Deng Yawen have secured spots in the BMX Freestyle competition at the Paris Summer Olympics. The duo clinched their qualifications through impressive performances in the Olympic Qualifier Series held in Shanghai and Budapest.

At the Shanghai stop, Sun Jiaqi and Deng Yawen showcased their skills by finishing on the podium behind teammate Sun Sibei. Despite Sun Sibei’s dominance in Shanghai, she unfortunately did not qualify after failing to reach the final in Budapest. The 19-year-old Sun Jiaqi and 18-year-old Deng Yawen, both transitioning from other cycling disciplines, have rapidly become integral members of China’s formidable BMX Freestyle team.

Since the establishment of China's BMX Freestyle squad in 2018, the team has made significant strides on the international stage. Sun Jiaqi made history as China's first BMX World Cup champion, while Deng Yawen is acclaimed for her versatility and comprehensive riding abilities. In the previous year's World Championships, Chinese riders impressively secured positions from second to sixth place, highlighting the nation's growing prominence in the sport.

As the Paris Games approach, Sun Jiaqi reflected on her recent performances and acknowledged the work ahead. "Competing in Shanghai was an incredible experience," she said. "I know there is still much to improve, and I'm committed to giving my best in Paris."
