China continues to solidify its position at the forefront of global 5G technology deployment. By the end of May 2024, the country had more than 3.8 million 5G base stations, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Zhao Zhiguo, chief engineer at the MIIT, announced these figures at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai, which commenced on Wednesday. \”China’s 5G base stations account for 60 percent of the global total,\” Zhao noted, highlighting the nation’s significant contribution to the advancement of 5G infrastructure worldwide.

With over half of China’s mobile phone users now utilizing 5G services, the rapid adoption underscores the technology’s integration into daily life. \”In China, more than half of all mobile phone users are 5G users,\” Zhao emphasized during his address at MWC Shanghai.

The international operator association GSMA forecasts that China’s number of 5G connections will reach 1.6 billion by the end of 2030, representing nearly a third of the global total. GSMA CEO John Hoffman remarked on China’s leadership in mobile communications, stating that the nation \”is at the forefront of the world in the field of mobile communication and has undertaken significant innovative exploration.\”

China’s advancements extend beyond sheer numbers; the country has been instrumental in integrating 5G technology across various vertical industries. \”China has provided experience in 5G+ vertical industries, such as intelligent manufacturing, transportation, and medical treatment,\” Hoffman added.

The widespread deployment of 5G in China not only accelerates domestic technological development but also sets a precedent for global innovation in telecommunications and related industries. As China continues to expand its 5G infrastructure, its experience offers valuable insights for countries worldwide looking to enhance their own technological capabilities.
