Central China’s Hunan Province is positioning itself as a future leader in advanced manufacturing and technological innovation. On Friday, Hunan Governor Mao Weiming announced ambitious plans to transform the province into a hub of cutting-edge industry and a model for reform and opening up in China’s inland regions.
“We are committed to upgrading traditional industries, strengthening our advantageous sectors, fostering emerging industries, and exploring future industrial opportunities,” Governor Mao stated at a press conference. He emphasized the province’s dedication to becoming a market-oriented, law-based, and international business environment.
Hunan’s high-tech industries have already made significant strides, with total output surpassing 1 trillion yuan (over $140 billion). The province is home to over 10,000 tech firms—a number that continues to grow rapidly. Notably, Hunan hosts China’s only national new-generation computing industry cluster and boasts the country’s largest rail transit equipment research, production, and export base.
In terms of innovation capacity, Hunan ranks ninth nationwide. The province has achieved breakthroughs in 147 technological projects through sustained high-level research in recent years. These advancements reflect Hunan’s commitment to becoming a sci-tech and innovation center.
The province’s efforts to improve its business environment have attracted 211 projects and subsidiaries from Fortune 500 companies. Governor Mao highlighted this success, noting that “thanks to our improved business environment, global industry leaders are choosing Hunan as a strategic location for investment and development.”
Hunan’s economic growth has been notable, with its GDP reaching over 5 trillion yuan last year—up from 2 trillion yuan in 2012. This growth is characterized by upgraded industries and improved quality, aligning with the province’s strategic focus on innovation and sustainability.
As Hunan continues to implement its vision for the future, it aims to be a pacesetter for reform and a driving force in China’s inland development. The province’s comprehensive approach to industrial advancement and innovation is expected to contribute significantly to both regional and national economic growth.
