Chinese Premier Li Qiang Urges Partnership with U.S. in Meeting with Yellen

Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasized the importance of partnership between China and the United States during his meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Sunday in Beijing. Li stated that the two countries should be “partners rather than adversaries,” highlighting the significance of mutual respect and cooperation for global economic growth.

Yellen visited China from July 6 to 9, holding several rounds of talks with Chinese officials, including Vice Premier He Lifeng in Beijing and Guangzhou. The discussions aimed to stabilize the bilateral relationship and address economic and trade issues.

Li expressed hope that the U.S. will abide by the basic norms of a market economy, including fair competition and open cooperation. He urged the United States to refrain from politicizing economic and trade issues, and to view production capacity “objectively from a market-oriented and global perspective.”

“As the world’s two largest economies, China and the U.S. have deeply intertwined economic interests,” Li said. “Strengthening economic and trade cooperation is of great significance to each other’s development and global economic growth.”

He stressed the need for both sides to enhance communication to manage and resolve differences, aiming to make bilateral economic and trade cooperation stable, smooth, and efficient. Li also noted that China is willing to strengthen policy coordination with the U.S. on climate change and other global challenges.

Yellen acknowledged the stabilization of U.S.-China relations, attributing it to joint efforts. She stated that the United States does not seek to “decouple” from China and is ready to work together to implement the important consensus reached by the two presidents.

“As the world’s two largest economies, the U.S. and China should manage their bilateral economic relationship responsibly,” Yellen said. She emphasized the importance of candid communication, avoiding misunderstandings, deepening exchanges and cooperation, and properly managing differences to promote steady development of bilateral relations.
