South Korea Bids Farewell to Fu Bao, First Giant Panda Born in the Country

Yongin, South Korea — In a heartfelt farewell, South Korea is saying goodbye to Fu Bao, the first giant panda born on its soil, as she departs for China. A special event was held at Everland Theme Park in Yongin, where fans and media gathered to bid an emotional farewell to the beloved panda.

Fu Bao, whose name means “a treasure that brings happiness,” was born in 2020 to parents Ai Bao and Le Bao. The pair of giant pandas were sent from China to South Korea in 2016 as part of a 15-year collaborative agreement symbolizing the enduring friendship between the two nations.

The farewell event was a mix of celebration and nostalgia, highlighting the impact Fu Bao has had on wildlife conservation awareness and cultural exchange. Everland, South Korea’s largest theme park, has been home to Fu Bao and her parents, attracting numerous visitors eager to catch a glimpse of the charming panda family.

Fu Bao will be relocated to China’s Wolong Giant Panda National Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province, a leading center for giant panda conservation and research. Her return to China marks a significant step in international conservation efforts, allowing Fu Bao to join a larger community of giant pandas and contribute to the genetic diversity of the species.

“Fu Bao has been a symbol of joy and a bridge of friendship between South Korea and China,” said a representative from Everland. “We are proud of her growth and the happiness she has brought to so many. We will continue to support global efforts in wildlife conservation.”

The giant panda has long been a symbol of diplomatic goodwill for China, often loaned to other countries as part of “panda diplomacy” initiatives. Fu Bao’s journey highlights the collaborative efforts in conservation and the strengthening ties between China and South Korea.

As Fu Bao embarks on her new journey, both nations look forward to continued cooperation in wildlife conservation and cultural exchange, fostering deeper understanding and friendship between their peoples.
