Residents in Xizang Embrace Solar Energy for Greener Winters
In the high-altitude region of Xainza County, Nagqu City, southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, rows of solar thermal collectors stretch across the landscape at nearly 4,700 meters above sea level. These collectors are transforming abundant sunlight into clean, efficient heating, bringing warmth to the homes of local residents.
Located in the heart of Xizang’s northern hinterland, Xainza County endures thin air and a cold, dry climate. Despite these harsh conditions, the region is rich in solar energy resources, boasting an impressive annual sunshine duration of approximately 2,915 hours. Leveraging this natural advantage, over 2,900 residents now benefit from a solar central heating system that covers about 175,400 square meters, including 851 households, three schools, and several office buildings.
Local resident Yang Tsering has felt a significant difference in his home since the implementation of the solar heating system. “The plants in my room grow even better after the heating was turned on,” he shared. Recalling the past, Yang noted that his family once relied on burning two cartloads of cow dung in their stove to keep warm during the frigid winters. The new solar heating has allowed them to bid farewell to the smoky, labor-intensive practices of the past.
According to Yang Cankui, manager of the local company responsible for the operation and maintenance of the central heating system, the heating season in Xainza County lasts for seven months, from November to the following June. The system provides 24-hour continuous heating, ensuring that residents remain comfortable throughout the long, cold season.
The adoption of solar energy not only improves the quality of life for the residents but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing reliance on traditional biomass fuels. As more communities in Xizang embrace renewable energy solutions, the region sets an example for sustainable living in high-altitude, cold-climate areas.
