China Urges U.S. to Halt Venezuela Pressure Campaign at UN

China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Sun Lei, called on the United States to immediately cease its unilateral actions against Venezuela during a UN Security Council meeting this week. The remarks, delivered on Tuesday, emphasized Washington’s escalating military presence near Venezuelan waters and its imposition of sanctions, blockades, and threats as destabilizing factors in the region.

Sun highlighted U.S. measures such as designating Venezuela’s government as a “foreign terrorist organization,” seizing Venezuelan oil assets, and threatening military strikes. “These actions violate the UN Charter and international law, infringing on Venezuela’s sovereignty and regional peace,” he stated, noting growing international condemnation of the campaign.

The envoy reaffirmed China’s opposition to unilateral coercion and support for Venezuela’s right to pursue independent foreign cooperation. “Latin America and the Caribbean are vital to the Global South’s development,” Sun added, urging the U.S. to lift sanctions and prioritize dialogue to stabilize the region.

Sun’s address aligns with broader Chinese advocacy for multilateralism, emphasizing respect for national sovereignty amid rising geopolitical tensions. Analysts suggest the stance reinforces Beijing’s role as a counterbalance to Western interventions in Global South nations.
