Malaysian Student Inspired by China’s Lei Feng Spirit

BEIJING—Studying economics and finance at Tsinghua University, Malaysian student Tang Yan Joo has found more than just academic opportunities in China. Her journey with Chinese culture began in high school when she attended a winter camp in Liaoning Province.

During the camp, Tang immersed herself in traditional Chinese arts, learning knitting and calligraphy. She also visited the Shenyang Palace Museum, where the rich history resonated deeply with her.

The most profound experience for Tang was her visit to the Lei Feng Memorial Hall. “I was deeply touched by the story of Lei Feng and his spirit of ‘serving the people wholeheartedly,'” she said. “It inspired me to contribute positively to society.”

The friendships she formed and the cultural insights she gained have influenced her life choices, leading her to pursue higher education in China. Tang believes that understanding and embracing different cultures can bridge gaps and foster global unity.

“China has become a second home to me,” Tang shared. “The people, the culture, and the spirit of selflessness embodied by figures like Lei Feng have left an indelible mark on my heart.”
