As China and Mozambique celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, President Daniel Francisco Chapo reflects on a partnership rooted in mutual respect and evolving ambitions. In an exclusive interview with CMG's Wang Guan in Maputo, Chapo highlighted how this 'brotherhood' has transformed lives through infrastructure, healthcare, and agricultural collaboration.
From Liberation to Modernization
Chapo traced the relationship's origins to Mozambique's independence struggle, when China provided critical support. Today, the Maputo-Katembe Bridge – locally dubbed the 'Dream Bridge' – stands as a symbol of progress, connecting communities while enabling $680 million in annual economic activity. 'This is what partnership looks like,' Chapo remarked, noting China's role in building 13,000 km of roads and 22 hospitals nationwide.
Seeds of Food Security
Agricultural cooperation takes center stage as Mozambique battles climate challenges. Chinese hybrid rice varieties now yield 7-9 tons per hectare compared to local 1.5-ton averages. Over 2,000 Mozambican technicians have trained in China since 2012, with Chapo emphasizing: 'Food sovereignty is our shared mission.'
Blue Economy & Green Vision
The president praised President Xi Jinping's 'Two Mountains' environmental philosophy, which aligns with Mozambique's coastal development plans. 'Our 2,700 km coastline isn't just a resource – it's our children's inheritance,' Chapo said, highlighting joint marine research initiatives.
Looking Ahead
With seven visits to China under his belt, Chapo envisions deepened cooperation in digital infrastructure and renewable energy. As African nations increasingly shape global governance frameworks, he sees China as a crucial partner: 'The next 50 years must uplift all Global South voices.'
