Russia and Ukraine Trade Accusations Over Easter Ceasefire Violations

Russia and Ukraine have exchanged sharp accusations over violations of a short-lived Easter ceasefire this weekend, with both sides claiming thousands of breaches during the 16-hour truce period. The conflicting reports highlight ongoing tensions in the protracted conflict.

The Russian Defense Ministry stated on Sunday that Ukrainian forces violated the ceasefire 1,971 times since its implementation on Saturday. Meanwhile, Ukraine's military reported 2,299 alleged breaches by Russian forces, including 479 artillery shelling incidents and over 1,700 drone strikes.

Tass news agency cited Russian defense officials asserting that all troops in what Moscow terms the "Special Military Operation zone" strictly observed the ceasefire from 4 p.m. Moscow time on April 11. The dueling narratives underscore the challenges in verifying battlefield claims as diplomatic efforts remain stalled.

The failed truce, intended to coincide with Orthodox Easter observances, marks another setback in international peace initiatives. Analysts suggest the mutual accusations reflect both the fragmented nature of frontline operations and the strategic value of information warfare in shaping global perceptions.
