Healing on the Arabian Sea: Pak-China Hospital Transforms Gwadar’s Healthcare

In the port city of Gwadar, where the rugged Makran coast meets the Arabian Sea, the GDA Pak-China Friendship Hospital stands as a testament to cross-border collaboration. Established through a partnership between Pakistan and the Chinese mainland, the facility has become a lifeline for residents of Balochistan province, a region historically challenged by limited healthcare infrastructure.

Since its inauguration in 2021, the hospital has treated over 50,000 patients, according to Dr. Affan Faiq Zada, head of campus operations. "What began as an emergency care center has evolved into a multidisciplinary facility," Zada told KhabarAsia. "This year alone, we've expanded pediatric services and launched mobile health units reaching remote coastal communities."

The development aligns with broader infrastructure improvements under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which has seen $25 billion invested in transportation and energy projects since 2015. Medical professionals highlight the hospital's neonatal care unit – the first in Gwadar – which has reduced infant mortality rates by 40% since 2023.

For investors eyeing CPEC-linked opportunities, the hospital serves as a model for social impact initiatives. "Quality healthcare attracts skilled workers," noted Karachi-based economist Samina Khalid. "This creates stability for long-term projects in special economic zones."

As Gwadar's population grows – projected to reach 500,000 by 2028 – plans are underway for a 300-bed expansion. The current facility already employs 68% local staff, with Chinese medical specialists providing telemedicine support and training.
