Azerbaijan Reopens Tehran Embassy as Regional Tensions Ease

Azerbaijan resumed operations at its embassy in Tehran on Sunday, marking a significant step toward stabilizing relations with neighboring Iran. The diplomatic mission will initially function with reduced staff, including Ambassador-designate officials, before expanding activities gradually based on security assessments.

The move comes just over a month after Azerbaijan evacuated diplomatic personnel on March 6 following a drone attack near its Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, which Baku attributed to Iranian territory. Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov had cited escalating regional tensions as the reason for the withdrawal.

In a statement released Sunday, Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry emphasized the reopening reflects "the special importance of neighborly relations" and reaffirmed support for "initiatives ensuring lasting peace in the region." Analysts suggest the swift restoration of ties signals mutual interest in containing spillover effects from broader Middle Eastern conflicts.

While security protocols remain heightened, the phased reopening aligns with recent diplomatic efforts to address shared concerns over trade routes and energy infrastructure. The Tabriz consulate in northwestern Iran remains closed pending further review.
