Iran Demands Shift in US Priorities for Middle East Deal

Negotiations Hinge on US Stance Toward Israel, Says Iranian Official

Iranian First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref declared on Saturday that a diplomatic resolution to Middle East tensions would collapse if the United States prioritizes Israel's interests during ongoing talks in Islamabad, Pakistan. The warning comes as Iranian and US delegations attempt to stabilize a fragile two-week ceasefire following months of escalating violence.

Ceasefire Tested by Lebanon Strikes

While the temporary truce between Iran and the US took effect on April 9, Israel's simultaneous bombardment of Lebanon—reportedly killing over 300 people—has strained negotiations. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf reiterated demands for a Lebanon ceasefire and the release of $7 billion in frozen Iranian assets ahead of substantive talks.

Shadow of February Attacks Looms

The current crisis stems from joint US-Israeli strikes on February 28, 2026, which killed Iran's then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and triggered retaliatory Iranian attacks across the region. Analysts note that control over the Strait of Hormuz and energy security remain central to the conflict.

Conflicting Reports on Asset Unfreezing

While Iran's Tasnim news agency claimed progress on accessing blocked funds, US officials anonymously denied any agreement. The outcome could determine whether talks progress or collapse, with Aref vowing to intensify defensive measures if negotiations fail.
