UK Fuel Prices Hit Record High Amid Hormuz Crisis in 2026

British motorists and businesses are grappling with soaring fuel costs as geopolitical tensions in the Hormuz Strait disrupt global oil supplies. Average petrol prices have surged by 40p (53 cents) per liter since early March, with diesel now exceeding petrol costs—a rare reversal of historical trends.

The conflict in Iran, ongoing since February 28, has severely impacted Europe’s energy markets. While the UK maintains limited North Sea oil production and imports petrol from Belgian and Dutch refineries, diesel supplies face steep price hikes due to rerouted shipping and heightened insurance costs.

In west London, driver Denise voiced frustrations shared nationwide: “I paid £1.31 per liter a month ago—now it’s £1.56. This hits families and small businesses hardest.” Unleaded petrol recently peaked at £1.79 ($$2.40) per liter, with analysts warning of further increases.

Haulage companies report operational costs rising 18% this quarter, potentially affecting consumer goods pricing. Energy economists attribute the crisis to reduced Middle Eastern exports and increased Asian demand, creating a supply squeeze expected to persist through 2026.
