Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy have agreed to implement a temporary ceasefire during Orthodox Easter observances this weekend, marking a rare moment of coordination between the two nations amid ongoing tensions. The truce will take effect from 16:00 on April 11 through midnight on April 12, 2026, aligning with this year's Orthodox Easter celebrations.
The Kremlin confirmed Thursday that Defense Minister Andrei Belousov and Armed Forces Chief Valery Gerasimov received direct orders to halt combat operations across all fronts. Zelenskyy responded via Telegram, stating Ukraine had long advocated for such pauses during religious holidays: "People need an Easter without threats. This could be Russia's chance to choose lasting peace."
While previous Easter ceasefires in 2023 and 2024 saw partial compliance, this year's agreement comes as both nations face increasing international pressure to resume peace negotiations. Analysts suggest the temporary halt could test Moscow's recent claims of battlefield dominance while offering civilians brief respite in conflict zones.
