Meta unveiled its first new artificial intelligence model since restructuring its research division, introducing Muse Spark on April 9, 2026. The AI system promises enhanced reasoning capabilities and faster processing, marking a strategic shift for the company's AI ambitions.
The launch follows a nine-month overhaul of Meta's Superintelligence Labs, which saw the departure of long-time AI research lead Yann LeCun and the recruitment of top talent from rivals including OpenAI and Google. Muse Spark replaces the Llama 4 model released in 2025, which struggled to keep pace with innovations from Chinese, French, and U.S. competitors.
Currently available only in the United States, Muse Spark powers Meta's AI app, smart glasses, and core social platforms. Company executives describe it as a "small but mighty" model capable of handling complex queries in STEM fields and health sciences.
The development comes after CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally led a recruitment drive, hiring Scale AI co-founder Alexandr Wang to head the new Superintelligence Labs unit. This pivot moves Meta away from its previous open-access AI strategy toward personalized systems that leverage user context across its platforms.
