Former Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi Dies After April 1 Strike

Kamal Kharazi, Iran’s former foreign minister and a key diplomatic figure, died on April 10, 2026, from injuries sustained during a strike on his Tehran home earlier this month. Iranian state media attributed the attack to joint U.S.-Israel operations, labeling it a “terrorist act by the American-Zionist enemy.”

Kharazi, 81, had been serving as head of the Strategic Council for International Relations, an advisory body under Iran’s foreign ministry. His wife was also killed in the April 1 strike, according to Mehr and Isna news agencies.

A veteran diplomat, Kharazi served as Iran’s foreign minister from 1997 to 2005 under reformist President Mohammad Khatami, navigating pivotal negotiations during heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear program. Prior to that role, he represented Iran at the United Nations in New York.

The incident has intensified regional tensions, with Iranian officials vowing a “swift response.” Analysts warn the escalation could further destabilize Middle East security frameworks amid ongoing proxy conflicts and stalled nuclear talks.
