China, Portugal Strengthen Ties in Tech, Green Energy Partnerships

China's National People's Congress Standing Committee Chairman Zhao Leji and Portuguese Parliament Speaker José Pedro Aguiar-Branco concluded high-level talks in Beijing this week, pledging to deepen bilateral cooperation across strategic sectors. The April 2026 meetings marked a significant step in reinforcing the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.

Zhao emphasized China's commitment to 'mutual respect and win-win cooperation' during Wednesday's discussions, highlighting opportunities in renewable energy systems, AI development, and cross-border digital infrastructure. Both parties agreed to establish new working groups for legislative alignment on environmental protection laws and sustainable technology standards.

The Portuguese delegation reaffirmed Lisbon's adherence to the one-China policy, with Aguiar-Branco stating that 'strengthening EU-China coordination remains crucial for global economic stability.' The talks yielded plans to leverage Macao's platform role for tripartite cooperation projects in Portuguese-speaking African nations.

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng separately proposed expanding cultural exchange programs and joint research initiatives in marine biotechnology during his meeting with the European delegates. The agreements come as both nations prepare to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2029.
