DPRK Praises ROK Leader’s ‘Wise’ Stance on Drone Incident

A senior Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) official has described Republic of Korea (ROK) President Lee Jae Myung's recent expression of regret over a drone incursion as "a wise course of action," signaling a potential thaw in cross-border tensions. The rare positive response came through Kim Yo Jong, department director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, who characterized Lee's remarks as demonstrating "frank and broad-minded" leadership.

The development follows President Lee's Monday cabinet meeting address, where he personally regretted "unnecessary military tensions" caused by unauthorized drone flights into DPRK airspace. While emphasizing the actions didn't represent official ROK policy, Lee acknowledged the incident's potential to escalate hostilities on the Korean Peninsula.

Kim's statement, carried by the Korean Central News Agency, cautioned Seoul against future provocations while noting: "If incidents infringing upon our state's sovereignty recur, they will pay an unbearable price." This dual messaging combines diplomatic openness with characteristic DPRK firmness on sovereignty issues.

The exchange marks the first direct response from Pyongyang to Seoul's leadership since the drone incident became public. It follows ROK Unification Minister Chung Dong-young's formal apology to the DPRK in February 2026 over similar unauthorized civilian flights, suggesting ongoing efforts to manage cross-border sensitivities.
