At least 45 people have died and more than 100 sustained injuries in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province following torrential rains that triggered flash floods and landslides since late March, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The hardest-hit areas include Swat, Dir, and Chitral districts, where collapsed homes and infrastructure failures have displaced thousands.
PDMA Director-General Sharif Hussain confirmed to local media on April 6 that rescue teams are working to clear blocked roads and deliver emergency supplies. "We're prioritizing medical aid for the injured and temporary shelters for displaced families," he stated, noting that the death toll may rise as crews reach remote villages.
This disaster follows unusual pre-monsoon rainfall patterns observed across South Asia this year. Meteorologists attribute the extreme weather to warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean, a phenomenon increasingly linked to global climate shifts.
