The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF have issued urgent warnings about intensifying attacks on Sudan's health facilities, with 13 incidents recorded in the first three months of 2026 alone. Nearly three years of conflict have left 2,042 dead and 785 injured from 214 verified assaults on medical centers since fighting began in 2023.
Crisis in White Nile State
A devastating April 2 strike destroyed Al Jabalayn Teaching Hospital's emergency and surgical units, killing 10 health workers including its medical director. This follows March attacks on Kurmuk Teaching Hospital and a critical medical warehouse in Rabak, paralyzing care for 11 million people needing urgent assistance.
Systemic Collapse, Human Toll
WHO Representative Shible Sahbani emphasized the consequences: "These attacks restrict essential services when needed most." UNICEF's Sheldon Yett highlighted impacts on children, noting "targeted hospitals violate their right to protection during vulnerability."
International Law Violations
Both agencies condemned the destruction as breaches of humanitarian protocols, exacerbating one of the world's worst displacement crises. They called for immediate protection of health workers and unimpeded access to care.
