Deadly Storms Wreak Havoc Across 25 Provinces
At least 61 people have died and 116 sustained injuries in recent rain-related disasters across Afghanistan, according to a Saturday announcement by Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Afghan government. Four individuals remain missing as search efforts continue.
Southern and Western Regions Hardest Hit
Mujahid confirmed via social media that southern and western provinces bore the brunt of the destruction. The storms destroyed 2,448 homes completely or partially, while floodwaters ravaged 26,841 acres of agricultural land – a critical blow to food security in the drought-prone nation.
Meteorologists Warn of New Flood Risks
With Afghanistan's meteorological department forecasting additional heavy rainfall this week, authorities are preparing for potential new flooding. Remote communities face particular vulnerability due to damaged infrastructure and limited emergency response capabilities.
The disasters highlight Afghanistan's acute climate challenges as it enters its second consecutive year of extreme weather events. International aid organizations are mobilizing relief efforts for displaced families.
