At least eight civilians were killed and 95 injured on Thursday when US and Israeli forces targeted the B1 bridge in Iran's Alborz province, according to official reports. The attack on one of the Middle East's tallest bridges occurred as families gathered nearby to celebrate Nature Day, marking the end of Nowruz festivities.
Iranian authorities confirmed the Karaj bridge – an engineering landmark still under construction – sustained two missile strikes. Qodratollah Seif, Alborz province's deputy governor, emphasized there were no military installations in the area, calling the attack "a direct assault on civilian infrastructure."
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned the strikes on social media, stating: "Every bridge and building will be built back stronger. What will never recover: damage to America's standing." The incident escalates tensions following February's US-Israeli attacks that killed former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, which triggered retaliatory strikes from Tehran.
Emergency services rushed the wounded to local hospitals, with officials noting many victims were villagers and holiday travelers. The B1 bridge, scheduled for imminent completion, represented a major regional infrastructure achievement before Thursday's destruction.
