WhatsApp revealed this week that Italian surveillance company ASIGINT deployed sophisticated spyware through a counterfeit version of its messaging platform, compromising approximately 200 users primarily in Italy. The malicious software, distributed through deceptive installation methods, enabled unauthorized surveillance of victims' devices.
Parent company Meta Platforms stated ASIGINT – a subsidiary of Brescia-based SIO specializing in cyber intelligence solutions – executed the highly targeted campaign. SIO's website lists partnerships with law enforcement and government agencies, though Italian authorities have not yet commented on the allegations.
This marks Meta's second public disclosure of spyware operations in Italy within 15 months, following last year's exposure of surveillance activities involving US-developed Paragon software. The 2025 Paragon incident triggered significant policy reforms before Italy terminated its contract with the firm.
Cybersecurity experts warn such incidents underscore growing challenges in digital privacy protection, particularly for high-risk individuals. WhatsApp has notified affected users and implemented additional security measures while investigations continue.
