Cote d’Ivoire Deploys First Operational Weather Radar to Boost Climate Resilience

Cote d'Ivoire marked a milestone in climate preparedness this week with the launch of its first operational weather radar, a $32 million initiative aimed at mitigating risks from extreme weather events. The system, commissioned on Wednesday by the state-owned Airport, Aeronautical and Meteorological Operations and Development Company (SODEXAM), will provide real-time monitoring of atmospheric conditions across the West African nation.

Abdul Sylla, SODEXAM's acting director general, described the radar as a 'transformative tool for safeguarding lives and livelihoods,' emphasizing its role in improving early warning systems for storms, floods, and other climate-related hazards. The technology forms part of the broader 'Vigilance, Alerts, and Climate and Meteorological Services for Users' project designed to modernize national infrastructure.

Meteorologists anticipate the radar will significantly enhance forecast accuracy for agricultural planning and disaster response—critical needs in a country where over 60% of the workforce depends on climate-sensitive sectors. The development comes as West African nations intensify efforts to address climate vulnerability through technological innovation.
