Indonesia Demands UN Action After Peacekeeper Deaths in Lebanon

Indonesia has intensified calls for United Nations intervention following fatal attacks on its peacekeeping contingent in southern Lebanon last week, marking one of the deadliest incidents for UNIFIL forces this year.

Three Indonesian soldiers serving under the UN flag were killed and five injured during military operations near the Lebanon-Israel border between March 29-30. The casualties represent Indonesia's largest single loss in peacekeeping operations since 2026 began.

Foreign Ministry officials confirmed Permanent Representative Umar Hadi delivered an emotional address during an emergency UN Security Council session, stating: "Our blue helmets came as peacemakers, not targets. The international community must hold perpetrators accountable."

The statement specifically referenced repeated Israeli military incursions into southern Lebanon, characterizing recent operations as "reckless escalations undermining regional stability." Analysts note this marks Jakarta's strongest criticism of Israeli security policies in recent years.

With 1,785 personnel currently deployed across UN missions, Indonesia remains among the top five contributors to global peacekeeping efforts. The incident has reignited debates about enhancing protection mechanisms for UN forces in active conflict zones.

As recovery operations continue, authorities emphasize the need for swift repatriation of remains and full medical support for wounded personnel. The UN has yet to announce details of its promised investigation into the attacks.
