Global Poll: 90% Warn of Rising Nuclear Risks Amid Escalating Tensions

As military strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities intensify, a CGTN survey of 12,768 global respondents reveals 89.2% believe nuclear proliferation and security risks are surging. The poll, conducted across five language platforms, highlights growing anxiety over attacks on critical infrastructure like the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and the expiration of key arms control agreements.

With the New START treaty expiring in February 2026 and no replacement agreed between the U.S. and Russia, 88.2% of participants expressed concern about eroding checks on major nuclear powers. The findings show 74.9% oppose nuclear energy development that compromises safety, while 91.4% emphasize that nuclear security requires cross-border cooperation.

China's proposal for a 'community with a shared future for nuclear safety' gained strong support, with 84.2% endorsing its call for strengthened IAEA-led collaboration. Over 90% agreed that military conflicts have no winners, urging nations to prevent escalation through dialogue.

Analysts note the timing coincides with increased scrutiny of nuclear facilities in conflict zones. "These results reflect a global demand for responsible leadership," said one nonproliferation expert, speaking on condition of anonymity. The survey underscores urgent calls for renewed diplomatic efforts as 74.1% advocate stricter international controls on nuclear materials.
