Zelenskyy Proposes Easter Ceasefire Amid Global Energy Concerns

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a temporary ceasefire with Russia during the Orthodox Easter period, which falls on April 16 this year. The proposal, announced on March 31, 2026, seeks a mutual pause in strikes targeting energy infrastructure to alleviate strain on global oil and gas markets.

"We are ready for a ceasefire during the Easter holidays," Zelenskyy stated via WhatsApp, emphasizing that "normal people who respect life" should prioritize a lasting peace. He added, "But we're ready for any compromises, except those involving our dignity and sovereignty."

The Ukrainian leader acknowledged recent diplomatic pressure from international partners urging restraint, pledging that Kyiv would refrain from targeting Russian energy facilities if Moscow reciprocates. As of March 31, no official response has been issued by Russian authorities.

Analysts suggest the proposed truce could stabilize energy prices ahead of peak summer demand, though skepticism remains about long-term de-escalation prospects. The initiative coincides with Orthodox Holy Week observances, a period of heightened significance for millions in Eastern Europe.
