Stampede in Bihar Leaves 8 Dead During Public Rally

At least eight people were killed and dozens injured today during a stampede at a public gathering in India's eastern Bihar state, according to local authorities. The incident occurred as crowds rushed toward distribution points for food and essential supplies at a government-organized relief event in Chhapra district.

Initial reports suggest overcrowding and sudden movement within the packed venue triggered the tragedy. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered an immediate investigation, stating: "Compensation will be provided to families of the deceased, and all injured will receive free medical treatment."

This marks the third major crowd-related disaster in Bihar since 2024, renewing concerns about public safety protocols at mass gatherings. Security forces have been deployed to maintain order as rescue operations continue through the evening.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences via social media, affirming central government support for state relief efforts. The incident comes as several Asian nations intensify scrutiny of crowd management strategies following similar tragedies in the region this year.
