Russia Warns South Korea Over NATO Alignment, Threatens Retaliation

Russia has issued a stark warning to the Republic of Korea (ROK) regarding its growing cooperation with NATO, stating that Seoul’s actions could severely damage bilateral relations. The caution came from Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko during a Saturday interview with TASS, where he criticized the ROK’s role in supplying weapons to Ukraine for NATO-backed efforts.

“We consistently convey to the ROK side through various channels Russia’s principled position on the unacceptability of its involvement in direct or indirect transfers of lethal weapons to the Kiev regime,” Rudenko stated. He emphasized that failure to address these concerns could lead to “retaliatory measures” from Moscow.

While acknowledging a recent softening of rhetoric from Seoul’s current administration, Rudenko noted that declarations of goodwill have not translated into concrete steps to restore trade and economic cooperation. “Despite the significant degradation of political dialogue and practical cooperation between Russia and ROK due to the unfriendly actions of the previous authorities, we have managed to keep our relations from complete collapse,” he added.

The remarks highlight escalating tensions in Asia’s geopolitical landscape as global alliances shift. Analysts suggest the ROK’s strategic balancing act between Western partnerships and regional stability will face increasing scrutiny in 2026.
