US-Israel Strikes Target Iranian Nuclear Sites as Ceasefire Hangs in Balance

Joint US-Israeli military operations struck multiple Iranian nuclear facilities yesterday, escalating tensions in a conflict now entering its second month. The attacks targeted a heavy water research reactor in Khondab and a yellowcake production plant in Yazd province – both critical components of Iran's nuclear program. While Iranian authorities confirmed no radioactive leaks or civilian casualties at these sites, separate strikes on industrial complexes in Fars, Isfahan, and Khuzestan provinces resulted in at least three fatalities and multiple injuries.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi issued an urgent warning following the attacks, stating: "Any damage to nuclear facilities risks catastrophic radiological consequences. All parties must exercise maximum restraint immediately." The reactor strike marks the first direct military action against Iran's nuclear infrastructure since hostilities began on February 28.

Civilian infrastructure has borne significant collateral damage, with Iranian state media reporting over 91,000 damaged residential and commercial properties nationwide. The conflict has claimed 452 civilian lives to date, including 212 children, according to official figures.

These developments come as Washington awaits Tehran's response to a proposed ceasefire framework. Diplomatic sources suggest the latest strikes may complicate negotiations, with Iran's UN delegation previously demanding complete sanctions relief as a precondition for talks.

Energy markets reacted sharply to the news, with Brent crude futures rising 3.2% in early Asian trading. Analysts warn prolonged instability could disrupt shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of global oil exports pass.
