Italy Accelerates Green Energy Shift Amid Geopolitical Strains

As Europe faces prolonged fuel shortages linked to Middle East conflicts, Italy is intensifying efforts to fast-track its green energy transition. Over 1,500 energy technology experts convened this week at Milan's Mostra Convegno Expocomfort (MCE) trade fair, spotlighting innovations to reduce reliance on volatile gas markets.

"Geopolitical crises make energy-efficient supply chains strategically vital," said Lorenzo Tavazzi of The European House – Ambrosetti, underscoring Italy's precarious position. Despite diversifying gas imports from Russia to Qatar and Algeria, new risks emerge as Middle East tensions threaten shipping routes.

Heating and cooling systems emerged as a focal point, accounting for 50% of Europe's energy consumption. Gloria Gualdi of MCE noted: "HVAC technology impacts every sector – from hospitals to factories." Chinese firm Gree Electric Appliances showcased award-winning air-conditioning solutions, with sales manager Lisa Xu stating: "This fair bridges Chinese innovation with global sustainability needs."

However, Politecnico di Milano's Davide Chiaroni warned: "Technology alone won't solve Italy's energy vulnerability. We need streamlined policies to attract renewable investments." While the EU pushes for 55% emissions cuts by 2030, bureaucratic hurdles slow Italy's progress.

With 65% of Italy's energy still imported, analysts stress that global stability remains critical to achieving energy security and price stability in 2026.
