East African Community Launches 10-Year Climate Resilience Plan

The East African Community (EAC) has unveiled a decade-long regional climate strategy to combat escalating environmental risks and foster sustainable economic growth, according to a statement released on March 27, 2026. The initiative aims to transform climate policy into concrete actions while improving access to global climate funding.

Strategic Priorities

The four-pillar plan focuses on modernizing early warning systems, promoting low-carbon industries, restoring cross-border ecosystems, and strengthening governance frameworks. EAC Acting Director of Productive Sectors Simon Kiarie emphasized the strategy's role in converting policy commitments into bankable projects for international investors.

Economic and Human Impact

New data reveals the urgency: African nations currently lose 2-5% of GDP annually to climate disasters, with East Africa projected to sustain 2-4% yearly GDP losses by 2040. Over 4.7 million people in EAC states face recurring climate emergencies, a number expected to grow as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia prepare to join the bloc.

The strategy aligns with global climate frameworks while addressing regional specificities, from drought-prone pastoral lands to coastal vulnerabilities. Its success could reshape development trajectories across one of Africa's most dynamic economic regions.
