China Slashes Tariffs on Congo Imports to Boost Trade Ties from April 1

China will implement reduced tariffs on select imports from the Republic of the Congo starting April 1, 2026, as announced by the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council. This measure fulfills commitments under the Early Harvest Arrangement of the bilateral Economic Partnership Agreement, aligning with China's tariff law framework.

The tariff adjustments target specific goods to enhance economic collaboration, reflecting efforts to build what Chinese officials describe as "a high-level community with a shared future." Analysts suggest this move could expand market access for Congolese minerals and agricultural products while strengthening China's role as a key partner in Central Africa.

Business leaders anticipate increased cross-border investment opportunities, particularly in infrastructure and sustainable development projects. The policy arrives as China deepens economic engagement across Africa, with bilateral trade between China and the Republic of the Congo growing 14% year-on-year in 2025.
