US-Israel Strikes Damage Iran’s Cultural Heritage, UNESCO Alarmed

The ongoing conflict involving the US and Israel in Iran has caused unprecedented damage to the nation’s cultural heritage, with over 80 nationally and internationally recognized sites affected as of March 2026. Among the most severely impacted is Isfahan’s Chehel Sotoun Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its Persian architectural grandeur. Iran’s Cultural Heritage Minister Reza Salehi Amiri condemned the destruction as "extremely bitter," underscoring the loss of millennia-old landmarks.

Tehran’s Golestan Palace, another UNESCO-listed site often likened to France’s Versailles, has also sustained damage. UNESCO has urgently shared coordinates of all Iranian World Heritage sites with involved parties, calling for restraint under international law. The 1954 Hague Convention and UN Security Council Resolution 2347 explicitly prohibit targeting cultural property during conflicts, yet compliance remains in question.

Patty Gerstenblith, president of the US Committee of the Blue Shield International, warned that lax adherence to rules of engagement risks further civilian and cultural harm. Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s dismissal of such protocols as "stupid" has drawn criticism. As global institutions grapple with enforcement, the destruction highlights the broader human cost of war in an interconnected world.
