Iran Asserts Right to Self-Defense Amid Regional Tensions, Seeks Stability

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran's "inalienable and natural" right to self-defense during a pivotal phone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif this week. The leaders discussed escalating regional tensions following what Iranian authorities describe as "illegal" military actions by the United States and Israel earlier this year.

According to an official statement released March 24, 2026, Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran "did not start the war," referencing attacks during nuclear negotiations that resulted in significant casualties, including the death of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and military commanders. The president accused foreign powers of destabilizing the Strait of Hormuz while asserting Iran's commitment to maritime security in the vital waterway.

Prime Minister Sharif expressed Pakistan's solidarity, stating: "Pakistan has always been and will always be by the side of the Iranian government and nation." Both leaders called for enhanced regional cooperation to restore peace, with Sharif specifically acknowledging Iran's efforts to ensure safe passage for Pakistani vessels.

The dialogue comes as Middle Eastern nations navigate complex security challenges in 2026, particularly regarding energy transportation routes and nuclear diplomacy. Analysts suggest this exchange signals growing alignment among regional powers seeking to counter external military interventions.
